Trophy recycling day

If you have old trophies or plaques that are just collecting dust in your attic, garage or basement like me, considering giving them back to the club so that they can be recycled.

Bring your trophies to the Club Grounds clean-up/fun day/picnic next Saturday, Oct. 28. Vicky Boggie will collect them all and store them over the winter.

Last event of the season; last event ever at the Club Grounds

On Sunday, October 22, the UMTA will hold its final event of the season at the Faribault Club Grounds. (A reminder: County 29 is still closed from Highway 3. See this blog post for an alternate route.)

And it will be the last event held there as we will not be given the option to renew our lease for next season, as Mike explained a few weeks ago.

So be there for this final ride in our 37th season at the Club Grounds. And take some photos for the scrapbook.

Trials Central’s hopping video from US World Round

Andy, head honcho at Trials Central, has graciously given us permission to display this video of Marc Freixa, Adam Raga and Toni Bou in an informal back wheel hopping competition. He took the video at the TTC campsite practice area back in May at the World Round.

Fred Belair, founder of the El Trial de Espana, dies

Fred Belair, father of US Montesa importer Martin Belair, died Monday in California. Fred was the founder of the El Trial de Espana.

“Created by Fred Belair, the ETdE event has helped promote trials in the United States and has even managed to draw international recognition. Belair’s dream was to ‘provide the basis for an American to become World Trials Champion,’ and that hope was realized at the hands of American Bernie Schreiber in 1979. To this day, Schreiber remains the only American to have ever reached the sport’s pinnacle. But the El Trial de Espana event continues to live on.”

I spoke to Martin this afternoon. People can contact him via email. Here’s the info sent out by the Belair family.

“Fred Belair, known as the “Father of El Trial de Espana,” passed away in his sleep Monday morning. He was 83 years old.

A racer in his early years, Fred became a supporter of Observed Trials back in the 70′s and founded El Trial de EspaƱa, an annual event that raised funds to send the top American riders to compete in the FIM World Trials Championship against the world’s best, the Europeans.

El Trial de Espana, now in its 36th year, today continues to support the U.S. Team’s annual effort at the Trials des Nations, the trials equivalent to the Motocross of Nations.

Earlier this year, Fred was inducted into the the North American Trials Council (NATC) Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rose, as well as sons Fernando and Martin, and daughter Christina.

A rosary will be held at Custer-Christiansen Mortuary in West Covina, CA, Thursday, October 5th at 7:30PM. Services will be at 10AM Friday morning at St. Christopher’s Church, 629 S. Glendora Ave. in West Covina.”

Faribault club ground closing

On September 14, the UMTA received a letter from Evelyn Piper, who is the landowner of the Faribault club ground, in which she informed us of her decision not to renew our lease at the end of the 2006 season. We will be able to hold our final event of the season (Oct. 22) and we will have access to the property for recreational use through December 31, 2006.

The UMTA was established in 1969 and has operated continuously from the same location we enjoy today. Though we may feel sorrow in leaving this wonderful property, we must also express out heart-felt gratitude to the Piper family for allowing us to call their land our home.

In the interest of leaving the land as we found it, we will announce a date for a club ground clean up to remove the tires and logs from the pit area and ride the land to remove any debris we may have overlooked in the past. This will be an opportunity to have a final club fun day, camp out and tell stories about the generations of great times we have enjoyed through the goodwill of the Piper family.

Mike.
