As a result of much effort and work by the well skilled, rock hardened, and TRIALS dynasty developing 2006 UMTA Expert class champion Randy Kimmick (and family), FUN, FOOD, and FAME awaits TRIALS riders in Gilbert this weekend.
Chris Eddy perhaps said it best:
For the regulars that have been going to Gilbert over the last few years, you already know that it will be a great event.  The food that Vicki prepared for us last year was absolutey great and I am glad to hear she is back for another year.
For those of you that have not been up to Gilbert, you really don’t know what you are missing. About this time before every Gilbert event we try to round you guys up and convince you that the drive is worth it. The regular complaint I have heard, besides the drive, is that the dirt stains your bike. Take it from somebody that rarely washes their bike, this rumor is not true. When I did wash my bike at the end of the year I saw no evidence of Glibert on my bike.
Aside from the great variety of terrain, yes there is more to ride on than just rocks, the Gilbert cup is up for grabs. Imagine your name forever engraved on our enourmous UMTA plaque hanging in the DNR office. I have been saving my best performance for this event. (CAN YOU SAY…FAME!!!!)
Need more? How about our first female competitor of the year? That’s right, Jennifer will be out with her very own TY175 in the novice class. Watch out boys. So come on out and join us in Gilbert. If you can’t make it you will be missed, but we will have a lot of fun and good food regardless.
Calling ALL Trials enthusiasts;
THE PLACE to be this weekend is GILBERT MN!!!!!!!

This past weekend rounds 1 & 2 of the NATC national series were conducted at the Tucker Ranch in Cotopaxi CO. About 60 miles W of Colorado Springs at an elevation of 7000+ feet…the location was spectacular, the weather perfect, and the rocks REALLY BIG!!
Of course the highlight for the weekend was Wisconsin/WOTA’s own Patrick Smage winning both days in the PRO class. His Saturday win was a complete domination of the field and Sunday he pulled through again, finishing on top mainly because of his spectacular sideways leap/pivot off a 6 foot rock in the closing section!!
No other PRO rider got off this rock clean during any loop yet Pat did 3 times :=) This spectacular move not only thrilled the crowd, it also put a BIG smile on the usually stoic face of this young TRIALS star. Way to go PAT and congrats to the whole SMAGE family! (NOTE – Phil competed well and with a smile even though obviously still injured while Noel followed/encouraged Pat)
The other big highlight was our own UMTA vice-president Ben Winterer winning the Sportsmen Class on Sunday. Obviously hindered way more than most people by the high altitude and after a disappointing ride on Saturday, Ben courageously pressed through for a huge national win on Sunday!! Ben’s tenacity, perserverance, and skill did all UMTA-ers proud… WAY TO GO BEN!!!!!!
Steve Ahlers was riding his first trials of the season and although admittedly a little rusty, competed well in the SR 50 class on his new BETA. Steve said preparations are well under way for the Haggis-Basher in Duluth and he is also planning on riding at Gilbert on Saturday. Although not the first ride of the year, this was the first national for the Thomas boys. Curt rode in the Junior class for team Scorpa and Will rode the youth trials. Both competed well and as always Milt was there encouraging them on. He was Curts minder both days and FYI judging by the way he was breathing… he might be reconsidering his cigar tradition :=)
Ben, Steve, Curt, and Will represented the UMTA very well and if you come to Gilbert perhaps some of Ben’s national win will rub off on you… on second thought perhaps NOT but please come anyway :=))
See you in Gilbert for a great time in our own Rocky Mountains!

If you’re interested at all in TRIALS come on out to one of our events and check it out! A few people did at our first 2007 UMTA event and here is what one had to say:
I just want to say that the UMTA group is an extremely friendly group and are very helpful. I went to watch my first Trials event Sunday at Theilman and I want to thank the many people that explained Trials to me and let me ride their bikes. Thank you very much. — Jason Fox
Thank you Jason for coming out and we hope to see you again soon!
Any other Jason’s out there?

The 2007 season started off with almost 50 riders showing up to ride. We had good weather, great sections, and a few new riders who seemed to really enjoy the day. One of the highlights on Saturday was of course Griff Wigley coming out of semi-retirement and showing he still has the stuff by finishing 2nd in the Expert Class to Randy Kimmick; our 2006 Expert class champion and Sherco/Scorpa dealer. This class grew significantly in 2007 with the addition of Jay Drycz, Scott Booth, and of course BEAR.
In the Champ class the B Brothers (Brad Villand and Ben Winterer) showed even with a long layoff they can still impress with their skills and take a wild guess who won :=) A smaller Supersport class of 4 riders included Trialsmasters Brian Dotterwick and Mike Hendrickson, who both finished behind the signmaster… Marc Dittman on his new Montesa 4 stroke and the SS class winner Matt Wittlief.
One of the larger Advanced classes in UMTA history (13) launched the new season with perhaps the longest 1st loop time ever and everyone was glad we have no time penalties :=) Brian Drycz came out on top and perhaps the lowlight of the day (at least from this writers perspective) was Paul Redman on his 4RT taking 2nd and beating his Dad for the first time.
The intermediate class featured another father/son battle and Nate Hirt fresh off his Trials Training Center visit, started the new season with a win. (I feel your pain Pat Honorable mention for longtime UMTA-er Dad, Milt Thomas for riding his first event and finishing the day with a smile… and a cigar of course!
Kevin Driscoll launched 2007 in the Novice class with first place honors and young Jason Hirt also put his recent Trials Training Center experience to work with a win in the Youth class. (A Sunday report and official results will be forthcoming)
Last but certainly not least, Rod Villand and Greg Huggenvik kicked off the Vintage class season without 2006 Vintage class champion Steve Kirschner and they said to be sure to communicate it was the funnest day of riding they ever had
Special thanks once again to Vickie Boggie for her great work on the registration table and to all those who helped set-up for the event. We need all UMTA-ers to step up and help for the season to be a success and I encourage everyone to not only enjoy the riding, but find a way to help in whatever way possible.
